Weekend at the Bar-B-Q

This was the 50th anniversary of the Cutchogue Firemen’s Bar-B-Q, and I’m glad I attended.  The chicken was excellent – even better than usual, I think.  Corn was sweet and tender – the first truly excellent ear I’d had all summer.  Sides were good, company was just fine, and the desserts were big servings of ice cream again (they’d had frozen yogurt for a while) and the usual delicious peaches.

This is a sort of family pilgrimage: when the videographer came around making the documentary of their 50 years of history, my grandmother mentioned that she’d been to 49 of the 50 years – I think he was a little impressed.  The great thing – besides the food and company – is that they’ve avoided rain nearly every year.  This year was a touch overcast, but still warm and dry, the rain holding off until well after the event.

It’s hard to explain, but it was an important trip for me.  It’s something I’ve done over 80% of the years in my life, so it’s nice to be able to get down there.  Next year I’ll get Roxanne and Amy to come too – this year they had a friend’s birthday party at exactly the same time (which was fun too they claim!).
